Relationship between Sugar Content and Sucrose Synthase Acitivity in Orange Fruits

Abstract
This study was aimed to elucidate a role of key enzymes in sucrose synthesis of oranges (Citrus sinensis L.). Sugar content in fruit, sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) and sucrose synthase (SS) activities in leaves and fruit of ¢¥Valencia¢¥, and the correlation between sugar content and enzyme activities of fruit with different cultivars were evaluated at the different stages of development. Total sugar content was increased almost by double mainly due to a rapid rise of sucrose content, but there was no specific pattern in enzyme activities of leaves and fruit related to the sugar accumulation of fruit ¢¥Valencia¢¥ orange. The significantly positive correlation between soluble solids, sugar content and sucrose content and SS activity based on fresh weight of juice tissues were observed.
